Visas and entry to Hungary


Hungary is a member of the European Union since 2004 and it is among the 26 European states that are part of the Schengen Area, which means that travelling to Hungary is comparable to visiting other Schengen states.

US Citizens
US citizens may enter Hungary without a visa for up to 90 days for tourist or business purposes. You will need a passport that is valid for at least 3 months beyond your stay. You might also be asked to show a return airline ticket and prove that you have enough funds for your holiday.

Australian Citizens
Australian citizens do not need a visa to enter Hungary. You may stay as a tourist or for business purposes for a maximum of 90 days. Make sure that your passport has at least six months’ validity from when you plan to return to Australia. 

EU, EEA and Swiss Citizens
You will not need a visa to enter Hungary if you are a citizen of the European Union or European Economic Area. If you plan to stay for over 90 days, you must register with the regional Immigration Office.

Hungary entry requirements
To enter Hungary, you generally need a valid passport, a Schengen Visa, depending on your nationality, proof of your visit's purpose, evidence of sufficient funds, travel insurance, accommodation details, and a return ticket.
There are no COVID-19 requirements for travelers to enter Hungary.

  • The Hungary Schengen Visa is a multiple-entry travel document to visit Hungary and all other countries in the Schengen Area
  • You can stay in Hungary and the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days per entry
  • We advise you to apply for this visa 6 months ahead to avoid any delays due to limited appointment slots

Hungary Visa Application Steps

  1. Prepare all the required documents.
  2. Select “Tourism” as the reason for travel on the visa application form.
  3. Decide the number of entries needed to Hungary or the Schengen area.
  4. Fill out the application form.
    • The application form for a Hungarian Schengen visa can be downloaded from here. Applicants can also collect a paper copy from any Hungarian Consulate or Embassy.
  5. Schedule a visa appointment, if applicable.
    • Most applications require an in-person appointment at the nearest Hungarian Consulate or visa center in order to submit the application. Alternatively, applications may be submitted without prior appointment during normal operating hours. Contact the Hungarian Consulate or visa center to determine if there is a need to schedule an appointment.
  6. Submit your Hungary Schengen visa application.
    • Note: Applications must be submitted at least 30 days before the date of travel but not earlier than 6 months before the date of travel.
    • Generally, applications must be submitted in person to the Hungarian Consulate or visa processing center. However, there may be a few differences in the submission procedures.
    • In a few cases, applicants may have authorized persons submit the application on their behalf, as long as the authorization has been certified by a notary. Professional, cultural or sporting associations may also apply on behalf of a member. Travel agencies may also apply in the case of organized travel trips. However, the application must be signed personally by the applicant, even if someone or an organization is submitting on their behalf.
    • Applicants will likely be required to submit their fingerprints (biometric data). Children below the age of 12 are exempted from fingerprint data collection. Applicants who have submitted their fingerprints within the last 59 months will most likely not be asked to resubmit.
    • Applicants may also be asked to come back on another date for an interview regarding their trip.
  7. Pay the visa application fee.
